Glass Mosaic Wind Chime -Garden Decor with the Yard Art Ladies

Welcome to this month’s Summer Outdoor Art Fest with the Yard Art Ladies. This month we are turning thrift items into garden decor art.

This month, I took a piece of lilac branch and some glass mosaic tiles left over from another project and turned them into a colourful wind chime for the garden.

I love coloured glass – it reminds me of searching for sea glass on the beach or seeing the sun shine through a stained glass window at church on Sunday. And I love wind chimes – their tinkling sound on a sunny afternoon or deep melodic tune on foggy evening. Combining these two was a natural. Here’s how I made my own glass mosaic wind chime:

You’ll need:

A piece of wood about 12″ long – as I said, I used a piece of lilac branch that had come down.

Glass mosaic tiles – you can find these at any craft store

“Stretch Magic” plastic line – you could use fishing line too

Drill and drill bit large enough to accommodate line

Glue gun

Start by drilling an uneven number of holes along the side of the wood. The number of holes depends on the length of the twig – but space them about 2″ apart. I did seven.

Then thread a piece of Stretchy Magic line through each hole and double knot. Each piece of line should be about 9-12″ in varying lengths. One of the reasons I love the Stretchy Magic line is because it stretches and holds the knot easily. (It’s available at most craft supply stores in the jewellery making department).

Now you can start adding your glass pieces. Each tile has a “good” and “bad” side. In the picture above, the one on the left is the “good” side. You’ll want to make sure this side is on the outside.

Sandwich two pieces of glass over the line, securing with glue. Place them about 2″ apart on the line varying the number of tiles. Tie a piece of string on one end of the wood and secure with a knot at the other end to allow it to hang over a branch or hook.
