Garden Ladders ~ add some height to your garden!

Looking through pictures of my past and present gardens, I saw a theme forming ~ Garden Ladders! I haven’t met an old ladder I didn’t love and have put lots of them to use as garden accents. Old ladders make a great trellis for vines such as clematis and moonflowers. You can add vintage gardening tools for added interest until the vines get established and fill out. Putting birdhouses on ladders has been one of my favorite repurposes. Paint a group of ladders the same color to catch the eye and create a focal point. Our suburban home does not have feral cats, so they have been safe homes for the birds. Tiny wrens have been constant “renters” in our Birdhouse Ladder homes. If you have limited space for gardening, an old ladder is perfect for going vertical! Just screw the pots onto the rungs and your flowers will stay put even if jostled or on a windy day. This is a great idea for those in apartments or town homes with only patio or balcony space! Or, if you have a larger garden area, use pots on ladders to provide vertical interest in a flower bed or groundcover area. Water is a bird magnet in the garden. Make your own birdbaths easily from old step stools and a pot saucer! Paint them for added color, or keep them aged and vintage-looking. Best of all, they are easily cleaned, maintained and put away. Do you have collections of watering cans or birdhouses? Show them off on the side of a fence or wall by hanging a ladder horizontally and decorating it with your treasures. You can see that old ladders can add lots of interest and function to your garden. These are some of the ways I have utilized ladders in my gardens, but there are lots more ideas out there! I’m thinking a ladder arbor or a horizontal ladder trellis over the garage door might be something to try in the near future! How about you? Are you using ladders in your garden?
